Internet Marketing for Humans – Episode 1
Welcome to Internet Marketing For Humans, digestible internet marketing insight and advice to help you grow your business.
Welcome to Internet Marketing For Humans, I’m Andrew Laws, I run Andrew Laws LTD which is a hybrid marketing agency focused on SEO.
So, let’s talk about what this Podcast is going to be, now this is not an intro about me, this is a podcast focused on sharing knowledge. Internet marketing is accessible to everyone; some parts might require a bit more research and time on your part, but you don’t need to be a genius to exploit internet marketing to grow your business, no matter what your business might be.
So, what can you expect from the Internet Marketing For Humans’ podcast? Well we’ll probably be talking a fair bit about SEO, but internet marketing is about so much more than SEO. You won’t hear me talk about myself, or talk my business up, we’re here to help, not to sell.
We’ll be speaking to some of the people we’re lucky enough to work with, and chatting with some of the industry professionals that we believe can help you get to where you want to be. I’ll also be speaking to some of my clients to get the perspective of people on the front line. Wherever possible we’re going to relate the topics we discuss with real world experiences. Some episodes may be in reaction to industry news, but on the whole, we want each episode to stand on its own. So, in summary this podcast is designed to be brief, easy to understand, and actionable. We’re going to try and make each episode short enough to listen to on your way to work, no matter how short your commute is.
Right, so on to episode one! What is SEO and why should you care about SEO? This is a bit of a ‘list of things’ but we want to keep this podcast as simple as possible. If you have any questions about anything that we talk about in this podcast, ever, then please get in touch.
Put simply SEO stands for search engine optimisation, and there’s a methodology for trying to ensure that when people search online for whatever it is that you are selling, they find your website, and preferably higher up in the rankings than your competitors. When we talk about rankings, we simply mean what position our website result pops up when you search google for something. Position 1 page 1 is ideal, position 1247 on page 124 is not. SEO is only a part of internet marketing, but it has been a hot topic for a long time, so we want to talk about it before covering any other topics in the Internet Marketing For Humans’ podcast.
How potent is SEO? Well, whole businesses have been built on it. About 20 years ago I helped start a business called Best Badges; the only tool we had in our marketing arsenal at the time was SEO, and that company is still going strong today. Now on the whole we’re not going to plug anything in this podcast, but I recommend taking a look at www.bestbadges.co.uk.
SEO is a way of thinking more than a switch that be flicked on and off, when you learn the basics you can adapt the way you work to naturally fit in SEO techniques. We believe SEO knowledge is best shared, even among competitors, it’s such a young industry that we all have specialisms. It’s not as simple as saying one agency is better or worse at SEO, we all have different approaches based on industry best practice, we all have different strengths and weaknesses.
You may hear some people mention Black Hat SEO, and there is a lot of whole debate surrounding what Black Hat SEO even is, but we’re not going to get in to that! When planning an SEO strategy consider one golden rule, does what you’re doing make the web a better place? If it does then you’re well on your way to good SEO. SEO is not a dark art, Google makes it perfectly clear what they consider good practice, and good practice means always making the web a better place. Usually through better information and better website usability.
So, what is an SEO?
SEO is not a shortcut to bring customers to your website. There are other methods we use in internet marketing which bring instant results, but they tend to be more cost intensive in the short term. SEO is a long-term investment; SEO has some aspects that are check box exercises, like connecting to Google search console-although that is simplifying it a bit-but there are lots of SEO techniques that are well worth being mindful of in your daily business lives. SEO has some longer-term aspects and activities like consistent high-quality content generation, link building, and outreach.
Content generation is creating good content for your website, usually written articles but also graphics, video, and audio. We’ll be talking a bit more about that in future episodes. Link building and outreach are roughly in the same ball park, putting it simply we want people to link from their websites to your website.
So, what’s the simplest way to get your SEO started? Do good stuff, create good content, make connections; that really is at the fundamental heart of all good SEO! So, in summary, utilising SEO is a fantastic way to bring more customers to your virtual door, if you hire an SEO professional the return in your investment could be staggering.
But that’s all for this episode, please like, rate and subscribe; it really does help!
Thank you, until the next time, goodbye!
