There are many myths and mis-information about choosing the right domain name. There are even some companies who might tell you to buy domain names that you didn’t know you need. In this episode of ‘Internet Marketing for Humans’ we discuss what’s important and what isn’t. It’s easier than you might think to choose the right domain name for your project.
Lets get this out of the way first – exact match domains don’t help SEO
Think about how people will find your site.
The majority of people will find it by SEO or a link from another site, in that case it doesn’t really matter what your domain name is or how long it is.
However there are times when having a short, snappy domain name will be a big help, example:
Saying your domain name out loud, on the phone or at a networking event, or even from a stage!
Keep your domain name simple so avoid numbers and hyphens / dashes.
Google loves brands so it’s not a terrible idea to just use your brand.
What is a domain extension, it’s the bit after the last dot, so COM, co.uk, etc
There are billions available but I’m not sure the world is quite ready for them yet, so bearing in mind what I said before about saying your domain name out loud perhaps com an co.uk are still king?
Finally if someone contacts you saying that one of their customers wants to buy a variation of your domain name ignore them. But we’ll talk more on that in a future episode.
